They Might Be Giants - Long Tall Weekend [1999]



Long Tall Weekend is a downloadable album released by They Might Be Giants in 1999. It was released exclusively on-line through eMusic (see 1999 in music). It was the first major full-length album released exclusively on the Internet by an established major label band. [1] Many of these songs were outtakes from the Factory Showroom sessions. There were some copies of an actual Long Tall Weekend CD released at certain concerts, as well as some released to certain stores for promotional use.

The band marked the release of the album with a release party show at Irving Plaza. After the show, eMusic representatives tossed goodie bags filled with eMusic T-shirts and Long Tall Weekend CDs. These CDs tend to show up on eBay, as only a limited number were pressed.

In addition to the CDs from the release party, a special edition of the CD was packaged with the program for Wired Magazine's 1999 "Reader's Raves Awards" ceremony. This CD had all the same tracks as the eMusic version. These CDs have the Wired magazine logo just above the track listing on the front of the CD and have "for promotional use only" in the fine print at the bottom of the CD.

According to Gigantic, downloads of LTW through eMusic's subscription-based service caused TMBG to be the most downloaded artist on the internet in 1999. That feat was repeated by the band again in 2000. (Note - It was not specified if only legal downloads were counted in the figures or if illegal file sharing was counted as well.)

At this time, the album continues to be sold only through eMusic.

* "(She Thinks She's) Edith Head" and "Older" were re-recorded for They Might Be Giant's next album, Mink Car (2001)
* "Edison Museum" was re-released on No! (2002)
* "Rat Patrol", "Token Back to Brooklyn", "Reprehensible", "Certain People I Could Name" and "They Got Lost" later appeared on the rarities compilation album They Got Lost (2002)
* "Token Back To Brooklyn" also previously appeared as a hidden track on the CD version of Factory Showroom (1996)
* A live version of "They Got Lost" had been previously released on Severe Tire Damage (1998)
* "On Earth My Nina" is a backwards version of the song "Thunderbird", which wouldn't get an official release until The Spine. However, it isn't the actual song reversed, it is John Linnell singing what he heard when he reversed the song.

They Might Be Giants (commonly abbreviated to TMBG) is an American alternative rock band which began as a duo of John Flansburgh and John Linnell, and currently includes Marty Beller, Dan Miller, and Danny Weinkauf. Formed in 1982, they are best known for an unconventional and experimental style of alternative music. The group has found success on the modern rock and CMJ charts, in the children's music genre, and in theme music for several television programs and films.

The Spine Hits The Road is a live album by They Might Be Giants. It features tracks from various locations on their Spine Surfs The Hiway Tour. It is an iTunes exclusive album that was released on August 31, 2004. Great set list.

First released July 4, 1985
* The 1985 Demo Tape was originally distributed by the Johns at TMBG concerts in 1985-86. The material was recorded onto standard store-bought audio cassettes, and the liner notes were black and white photocopy. The tape went out of print not long after The Pink Album came out, but was rereleased in 1993 as a promotion by the Hello CD Of The Month Club. If subscribers added $5 to their subscription fee, they would receive a copy of the demo tape, which then had fancy-schmancy glossy liner notes and this message on the back:

* Hell Hotel was the only song from this tape that had not been reworked and/or released elsewhere until the 1983 demo version was released as part of Podcast 32A in 2008. It is the only song on the tape that has never been released on CD. It was rumored that the original tape had a different version of the song than the one on the Hello release, but this is not true.
* Notice there are 23 tracks on this demo tape. The number 23 plays an important role for the band. The following is from the liner notes of Then: The Earlier Years, referring to the Boys' second show, the first under their present name: "In spite of a heavy snow storm, 23 supportive friends came out, and the show was a big success."
* In Podcast 22A Cecil wrongly says that Weep Day appeared on this demo tape.

Since 1982, a few years before they released their 1987 debut, John Flansburgh and John Linnell have been They Might Be Giants, an independent band named after a 1971 George C. Scott movie who are, to echo their own description of their current collaborators The Dust Brothers, pop musicians unto themselves. Their work provides, in the prescient judgment of The SPIN Alternative Record Guide (1995) "a fabulous example of just how far the concept of punk can stretch." In subsequent years, They Might Be Giants have elongated things further, although never to the breaking point. John Linell - State Songs [1999]





The prolific and quirky John Linnell of They Might Be Giants has come up with 16 pop songs-one each for 16 different states of the U.S., but not literally, of course. Here you'll find songs about Iowa being a witch and Oregon being bad ("Oregon is bad / Stop it if you can"), coupled with every musical genre you can think of-bossa nova, carnival music, polka, you name it. Linnell's craggy twang wraps around the surreal lyrics with a brainy, tongue-in-cheek earnestness that will, no doubt, delight TMBG fans. Linnell, an equivocating sort, gives the rest of us a little slack. In "The Songs of the Fifty States," an overture of sorts, he sings, "I'm not going to say they're great, I ain't gonna say they ain't." Pipe organs and accordions flesh out most of these songs, contributing immensely to their old-timey wackiness and giving the impression that these pieces could have been written for a 1940s-era musical comedy.
