Blackened Sky (2002)

Info:

Blackened Sky is the product of four years of touring and hard work by the band. Produced by Chris Sheldon, who would continue to work with the band over the next few years, this is arguably the band at their most anthemic and sensitive, with songs veering from beautiful to raging anger, frequently within the space of a bar. Although, until Puzzle, it was considered the band's most accessible album, it shows the beginnings of the quirkier aspects of their sound that would be explored in more depth on The Vertigo of Bliss and Infinity Land. As with each of the band's three first albums, it has only been played in full once, on 13 December 2005 at King Tut's Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow. The album reached #78 in the UK Albums Chart.

Track Listing:

1. "Joy.Discovery.Invention" – 3:38
2. "27" – 3:27
3. "Justboy" – 4:22
4. "Kill the Old, Torture Their Young" – 6:12
5. "The Go-Slow" – 3:59
6. "Christopher's River" – 4:09

10. "Solution Devices" – 3:18

The Vertigo of Bliss (2003)

Info:

The Vertigo of Bliss is the second studio album by Scottish group Biffy Clyro, and contributed to the perception of the band as one of the hardest working in the British rock scene: according to urban myth, principal recording on the album was recorded in just one day, leaving the band to "play PlayStation" for the remainder of the week that had been booked in Linford Manor.

Recorded and released only one year after Blackened Sky, the album arguably sounds more like a singular piece of work (the only track not recorded during the same sessions was "Toys, Toys, Toys..." which was originally a double-A-side single with "Joy.Discovery.Invention") as opposed to a collection of individual songs. The album remains a firm favourite with a lot of fans on the Biffy Clyro board, perhaps because of its more experimental style, which sees songs such as "Bodies in Flight" and "Toys Toys Toys, Choke, Toys, Toys, Toys" cramming several movements into the space of one song. Moreover, string sections are used to climactic effect on "Bodies In Flight", "With Aplomb" and "Now The Action Is On Fire!" showing a clear progression from their debut. An example of the diversity within each of the tracks would be that of "Now the Action is on Fire!", which switches from an unusual 5/4 timed opening section to a second, 3/4 timed passage, incorporating strings and off-beat triplets, to a climactic end in 4/4 time, with each section introducing new musical material. The distinctive cover art was created by Milo Manara, who also created the cover art for all the singles from The Vertigo of Bliss. The album takes its name from one of Lucifer's musings in the novel, I, Lucifer. As with each of the band's first three albums, it has only been played in full once, on 14 December 2005 at King Tut's Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow. The album reached #48 in the UK Albums Chart.

Track Listing:

1. "Bodies In Flight" – 5:17
2. "The Ideal Height" – 3:41
3. "With Aplomb" – 5:29
4. "A Day Of..." – 2:24

Infinity Land (2004)

Info:

Infinity Land is the third album by the Scottish band Biffy Clyro, released on 4 October 2004 on record label Beggars Banquet.

The album saw the band move into darker territory, in terms of both sound and lyrical content. The cover art was created by Chris Fleming, who also created the cover art for all the singles from Infinity Land.

Simon Neil has stated in various interviews that the title Infinity Land is a reference to serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

Quote: It was in a Jeffrey Dahmer book, he talks about his ideal place, which is called Infinity Land - his idea of heaven - which is really grim, being surrounded by corpses and ~love~. You don't know what it's about, it could sound hopeful, but when you know what it's referring to, it becomes quite sinister. In a way, it's kinda cool that people don't know what we're referring to, that people make up their own meanings for things... it could be quite optimistic, but it's not.

The album furthered various experiments from The Vertigo of Bliss, such as using 5/4 time ("There is no Such Thing as a Jaggy Snake"), multiple time changes, key changes, and instrumental variation.

The album contains a hidden track, "Tradition Feed". After the final track, "Pause And Turn It Up", approximately 18 minutes of silence precedes a short poem, read by Simon Neil, dedicated to his late mother. "Tradition Feed" can also be found as a B-side to the vinyl 7" single "Only One Word Comes To Mind". As with each of the band's first three albums, it has been played in full once only, on 15 December 2005 at King Tut's Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow. It reached #47 in the UK Albums Chart.

"Glitter And Trauma", "My Recovery Injection", and "Only One Word Comes To Mind" were released as singles in edited forms. "There's No Such Thing As A Jaggy Snake" was released as digital download. "Got Wrong" was considered for the final single but lost out to "Only One Word Comes To Mind".

Track Listing:

1. "Glitter and Trauma" – 5:10
2. "Strung to Your Ribcage" – 2:39
3. "My Recovery Injection" – 4:13
4. "Got Wrong" – 2:58

Puzzle (2007)

Info:

Puzzle is the fourth studio album by Scottish rock band Biffy Clyro, released 4 June 2007 - the album was later released in America in August. It is the band's first album since leaving Beggars Banquet.

The album reached #2 in the UK Albums Chart to widespread critical acclaim, and was voted the best album of 2007 by Kerrang! and Rock Sound. The album also reached #17 in Ireland, and #39 in the overall world charts. The album is certified Gold in the UK, having sold over 100,000 copies.

This album is notable for its departure for having somewhat more straightforward song structures and a more melodic overall sound than their previous work, while still retaining some more unusual elements.

The album was recorded from September to November 2006 at The Warehouse Studio in Vancouver, Canada, and The Farm Studio in Gibsons, Canada. It was produced by Garth Richardson, mixed by Andy Wallace in New York, and mastered by Howie Weinberg at Masterdisk. The band said that they had 40 tracks to choose from, and that they had been recording with composer Graeme Revell and the Seattle Symphony Orchestra whilst making the album. The artwork for Puzzle and its subsequent singles was designed by Storm Thorgerson. The track listing was confirmed on 21 February 2007.

Compilations:

Singles 2001-2005 (2008)

Info:

In 2006, the band signed to 14th Floor Records while still under contract with Beggars Banquet. The band still had one album left on this contract, therefore this album is to fulfill contractual obligations. Beggars has been criticised for cashing in on the success of 2007's Puzzle. Dozens of fans expressed anger at the label for only releasing a 12 track collection of radio edited singles rather than a more expansive album of b-sides and rarities (as Beggars subsidiary Too Pure had done for mclusky - the mcluskyism retrospective featured 57 tracks over three discs). The band and management are thought not to be pleased with the release and are not expected to promote or even look at it.

The album collects singles from Blackened Sky (2002), The Vertigo of Bliss (2003) and Infinity Land (2004).

Track Listing:

1. "27"
2. "Justboy"
3. "57"
4. "Joy.Discovery.Invention"
5. "Toys, Toys, Toys, Choke, Toys, Toys, Toys" (Edit)
6. "The Ideal Height" (Edit)
7. "Questions and Answers"
8. "Eradicate the Doubt"
9. "There's No Such Thing As A Jaggy Snake"
10. "Glitter and Trauma" (Edit)
11. "My Recovery Injection" (Edit)
12. "Only One Word Comes To Mind" (Edit)
