Android if you like to modify your OS to your liking. If you like to play games IOS is better.

My personal preference is for Android. However I always advise people to get whatever most of their friends have, so you can get help easily.

They've just released iOS6 --- and needless to say its the same old stuff. There is nothing new, rather a very popular service "google maps" has been cut so that apple can launch its own service. I would go for android with the current climate. HTC One X just came out and Samsung Galaxy S III will be out shortly (or is already out in certain regions)

If you're still going with apple, then i would recommend waiting until October, generally this is when apple announces new iphones. So grab iPhone5 instead of 4S

iOS, no os is as smooth as iOS, sure its not easily modified (unless your iDevice is jailbroken ;). it's a free of stress OS, no lag, buttery smooth, and no hang.
coming from blackberry, i bought galaxy note few months ago... it's laggy and sometimes hang, after 1,5 months, i sold it... and bought iPhone 4s. and i'm very happy i made that decision.
had i stay with note and try to sell it now, i wont be able to get good amount of my money back. imo, even blackberry OS7 is snappier than android, but they lack of apps.
